Supply List - Painting Class

Quick List for First Class
  • 4 or 5 Long-Handled Brushes
    • Flat Shape (Bright is OK)
    • Bristle or Stiff Synthetic
    • Range of sizes - at least 1 size #1 & one size #10 or #12 (should be around 1" wide)
  • Oil Paint - we'll start off in black & white
    • Large (150mL) white tube of Zinc, Titanium, or Titanium/Zinc blend
    • Small (37mL) Ivory black tube
  • 12" x 16" Palette - disposable is fine
  • 2 Palette Knives - one 2" knife & one 3" knife
  • 2 Metal Palette Cups - type with screw-on lid is best - don't get plastic ones
  • Canvas Boards - get a couple 9"x12" boards- cheapo is fine
  • Odorless Mineral Spirits or Turpenoid (NOT Turpenoid Natural) to clean brushes - small can
  • Settling Jar for used turps (any empty jar- salsa jar shape is best if possible).
  • Cold Pressed Linseed Oil - small bottle
  • Small Sketchbook - Somewhere around 5"x7"
  • Pencil - H or HB - regular or mechanical
  • Eraser, Pencil-Style - Faber-Castell Eraser Pencil or Tuff Stuff Eraser Stick
  • Roll of paper towels
  • Hand Mirror - medium size - get at a drug store.
You can expect to spend around $100 at a reasonably priced store.  If there's one place to spend a little extra money, get extra brushes for now- it's very helpful to have a lot of brushes.  For paints, good brands to start out with are Gamblin, Winsor & Newton Artist Grade, or Utrecht.  If you are on a tight budget, try Winsor & Newton Winton.
